Reportage drawings

Reportage illustration is about being in the middle of things with a sketchbook in hand — drawing life, and drawing from life as it happens. I work on location, whether it’s ships in harbor, crowds at a fair, or classic cars at a show. I work with fountain pen and marker directly on the page, adding color as I go. The goal varies: sometimes it is just to capture the energy of the moment, sometimes it is thinking with my hands, with the location being a point of departure leading to further study. Regardless of the final outcome, these drawings stand on their own as recordings of what it felt like to be there, surrounded by movement, sound, and atmosphere.
